Palisade is a Defense Guard operative within the Global Security Initiative.
Early Life
The woman who would become Palisade grew up in Sydney, Australia. She came from a middle class background; her mother was a manager of a popular seafood restaurant in Botany Bay and her father was a Incremental Senior Constable, Field Operations, in the New South Wales Police Force. Although she grew up with a firm respect for law enforcement due to her father's presence, she never had any significant interest in following in her father's footsteps. On the contrary, she loved the water, loved the boats, and simply wanted to be an artist.
While most of the world quietly fell under the alliance of the Global Security Initiative, Australia included, it seemed to matter slightly less to the land down under. Australia, for all intents and purposes, was quite adept at being self-sustaining along with close relations from Micronesia, New Zealand, and the rest of Oceania. But one thing that all sovereign states had in common, outside of the GSI tax was the standardized testing. All educational institutions, public or private, were mandated for standardized testing as dictated by their code of regulations.
That's when the first knock came at the door. A group of two men in black business suits came to their home to talk about their daughter's near-perfect test scores.
Recruitment
The Global Security Initiative keeps a repository of all standardized test scores. When students score within a certain percentile, their records are flagged. When students score within a certain percentile year-over-year since they started taking the standardized tests, they get a visit from GSI officials. Typically, students remain unaware of their standardized testing scores as they're not used for academic placement or as learning tools. In actuality, they're used as recruiting tools for all manner of GSI positions.
In Palisade's case, it was clear where they wanted her: Security and counterintelligence.
When her parents expressed their confusion over their daughter's scores, the GSI officials summarized it very quickly for her. Whether through natural aptitude or through passive learning from her father, she was adept at recognizing process, procedure, and causality. Her ability to form logical conclusions from existing evidence and extrapolate cause and effect relationships between variables was unsurpassed in the years since GSI had started the standardized testing program. Her mother's ability to multitask and split her focus also seemed to be passed on to her. Part of the testing process is have a student's attention focused in multiple areas and then to recall those areas, but only specific details within them. This, combined with her natural artistic talent allowed her to recreate and synthesize sensory data and apply them across a wide spectrum of functional domains. She was the perfect candidate as far as they were concerned.
After talking it over with her, Palisade's parents agreed to try the program GSI wanted to enroll her in. This would be the last they ever saw of their daughter.
As Part of the Global Security Initiative
Upon graduation from the Program, one's previous identity is erased. There is no record of them. All members of the War Guard and Defense Guard are to never refer to themselves as their civilian names. Some may refer to each other by familiar aliases or names they've given each other, but as far as the rest of the world is concerned, they do not exist. There is no record of them.
Palisade was officially given her name when she was drafted into the Defense Guard. She excelled in melee combat and was once again flagged for her abilities both on and off the field of battle. It was then that Antares Castiglione requested her specifically for a new project whereby existing abilities would be enhanced through the use of a synthetic compound -- something dubbed Compound 36. There had been several other recruits with her during the trials, but she never saw any of the rest again.
The Compound gave her enhanced physical abilities with very little negative side effects. She was warned to keep her abilities under control and be extremely disciplined when using them. Her psychological profile seemed to indicate this would not be a problem.
Recently, Palisade was deployed to Fort McHenry where she was dispatched to act as part of the defense unit, along with fellow Guardsmen Barricade, Rampart, and Garrison, for a terrorist that had been captured and was awaiting transport, Dr. Kieran Foster. Foster was broken out, aided by Ethan Darcy, Gavin Prescott, Nomen Fitch, and Miranda Corgan. Palisade fought the Bravo Team, Gavin and Miranda, and lost one of her EMWs to Gavin during the battle.
Palisade would have her rematch with Gavin, as the Defense Guard was called in to support War Guard efforts on Lot 23. Their reunion would not last long, as all Guardsmen were part of an emergency deployment for a critical threat, leaving Gavin, Caitlyn Thresh, Shane Kolson, and Kallie Sanford to go back to their ship, the Eurydice.
Physical Appearance
Palisade has red hair, white eyes (side effect of Compound 36), but typically wears a hood or a visor to cover her eyes. She is taller than average height for a woman her age, just a few inches shy of six foot, and has a lean but muscular build. Because she's been given Compound 36, she has the ability to augment her physique respective to the amount of the compound activated within her body. She wears the uniform of the Global Security Initiative, which is black with red accents. Like most operatives, her uniform has been customized for her appearance and preferences.
Powers and Skills
Although not an Agent of the Order, Palisade has been exposed to Compound 36 and has received the final injection to make the abilities it grants permanent.
As such, she has the normal complement of abilities granted by the compound:
|
Like all those exposed to the compound, she can further activate the inert Compound 36 in her body to augment the aforementioned abilities even further. There is great risk involved in doing so, as pushing beyond an acceptable limit aggravates any side-effects of the Compound and can also lead to uncontrollable rage and an inability to form rational thought, relying purely on instinct and survival. Once this occurs, there is no treatment and the individual becomes an Aberration.
In addition to her Compound 36-based skills, Palisade is an extremely accomplished martial artist and has access to an infinite number of melee weapons as defined by energy-based malleable weapon (EMW). EMWs are not standard issue, however they are far from uncommon. Practitioners must display a certain level of mastery before they can be assigned. EMWs are self-sustaining devices, however energy-based constructs can be shattered with enough force. EMWs will auto-shutdown if a threshold of resistance if exceeded to prevent destruction of the weapon itself.
Other Information
Palisade typically hides her eyes behind under a hood or a set of visor-like sunglasses due to effects of Compound 36; her irises lost all pigmentation.
Perhaps due to her artistic ability, she is extremely adept at shaping weapons through her EMW device. Structurally, her weapons have more resiliency than do most others who shape them, perhaps due to her understanding of the geometry of their construction.
It's well-known that Palisade has a mutual dislike and distrust of Fray of the War Guard.
Palisade appears as someone not from her own reality to Shane because of her exposure to a substance outside of her own reality.
