Cadence Malloy is an Aberration and was the former Iota of the 3rd Generation of the Order.
Early Life
Cadence Malloy lived a charmed existence. She descended from an upper-middle class family in the Arlington, Virginia area. Her father was a program manager for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) within the United States federal government. Her mother was an elementary school teacher for one of the most prestigious charter schools in the state. Cadence had always been friendly, bright, out-going, and well-liked among her peers. In both middle and high school, she was a competitive cheerleader and gymnast and had once been scouted for a gymnastics scholarship. She'd enjoyed the best life had to offer, including a very large social circle.
One evening, while she was out with her friends, she'd been involved in a severe car crash; a head-on collision with another vehicle that resulted in the death of the driver and another passenger and critically wounded the driver of the other vehicle. The survivors were treated at a Consortium hospital in Washington, DC, and each other them -- Cadence included -- had taken the compatibility test prior to receiving treatment. Cadence was a very strong match and was approached a few weeks later by Consortium recruiters who seemed very interested in having her and her family attend an information seminar hosted by the Consortium. Her father was initially opposed, but was later swayed by both his wife and Cadence after the medical care she had received after the car accident. Additionally, she'd still felt guilty about the driver in her vehicle even though the collision was purely accidental.
As an Initiate
Cadence was an exceptional Initiate, even by Consortium standards. She excelled in weapons training, specifically small-bladed weapons. Although she was considered "proficient" in large-bladed weapons, her small stature made larger weapons difficult for her to handle. She was considered below average in firearms and instead opted for small throwing blades as her sidearm, which was uncommon but not all together unusual.
Academically, she was average. She had a tendency to perform better in practical academic disciplines, such as problem solving and critical thinking, but had a tendency toward reduced effort in subjects such as history, social sciences, and fine arts. She performed well in training assignments and was considered superior in small group tactics and strategic planning. Aligned with her problem solving and critical thinking skills, she was adept at finding solutions to problems as soon as they were presented.
At age 20 she was inducted into the Order, primarily due to her ability to lead squads and for her affinity in bladed weapons.
As Part of the Order
Cadence was as ruthless as one might expect based on her affinity with small bladed weapons. Combined with her natural aptitude for gymnastics, she could make very short work of an entire room full of opponents. She'd developed new techniques for Compound 36 activation, including one that allowed her to utilize super speed in just her arms and hands during hand-to-hand combat. This was especially deadly from her perspective, as her small bladed weapons could easily slice a target to ribbons in a very short period of time. She had initially been given a rank of Upsilon, number 20, upon entry into the Order, however within one year's time she'd achieved her rank of Iota, number 9.
As capable as she was in battle and in leading teams, the opposite was true in taking direction from her superiors. Her Handler, Erika Abrams, was known to be very strict, which Cadence did not respond very well to. On one particular assignment Cadence had directly disobeyed her and, even though the approach she'd taken had ultimately been successful, Erika was furious. As Handlers have the right to discipline their Agents as they deem appropriate, Erika favored a corporal punishment approach. At first, Cadence endured it. But after the second straight hour of corded lashings, Cadence refused to take it and had begun to walk away. When Erika struck her again, Cadence struck her back. And punched her in the face with such force that her fist broke through her skull cap and exited through the back of Erika's skull. She died instantly. Cadence fled and was excommunicated.
The Hunting Party
After she murdered her Handler, Cadence fled. During her absence the Sapientia convened and unanimously voted to excommunicate her. A Hunting Party was immediately assembled, composed of her peers, and sent after her. Five Agents of superior rank tracked her down in Athens, Greece. A bloody battle ensued and one by one, Cadence was able to dispatch each of the superior ranks before her, but not before the last had managed to push her past her C36 limit. As she'd prepared to deal the final blow to the last Agent, she felt the Compound overtake her. She'd finally become the monster they'd all accused her of being. She let the last one live to tell the others; if they'd come after her again she'd kill two for each one they sent.
The Underground Railroad
Cadence had become an Aberration during her fight with the Hunting Party that was assembled to kill her. She found that although "the beast" was still within her, she was able to control it. She wasn't certain if this was standard, but if it was -- why were Aberrations being hunted and killed? Cadence reasoned they could be rehabilitated. Was it not the same as Initiates slowly learning the limits of C36 activation? In this case, Aberrations had the ability to maintain logical, conscious thought. They were not all, in her experience, monsters. Some were, of course. But she determined she would help save those that could be saved. Using contacts she still maintained within the Consortium, once Aberrations were identified, she would be informed and would work to track them down; to invite them into her network.
There were rules to joining, not the very least of which was maintaining one's humanity. Aberrations had other, stronger physical abilities. These typically manifested differently than normal C36 abilities. When these were activated, it was called 'Filtering.' Filtering was strictly forbidden unless in combat and only combat with Agents. Further, Aberrations that truly could not maintain or fight back the bestial urges were to be put down, but mercifully. This act was called referred to as the 'Kindness,' and it was considered to be one of the primary tenets of their organization: To deliver the Kindness before Agents of the Order can make them suffer, which seemed to often be the case.
Recently, during a routine pick-up of another Aberration into their group, the [former] Theta, number 8, of the Current Generation of the Order had tracked him there. After a short battle Cadence killed him, which caused her to pack up their mobile operations to a new location once again.
Physical Appearance
Cadence Malloy has dark hair, a deathly pallor, and a lean, short build. She is just over five feet tall. Initially a honey-brown color, upon becoming an Aberration her eyes shifted into a deep, almost glowing amber color. When she begins to filter, that is allowing her aberrational form to come through, the sclera of her eyes becomes black and her pupils become vertical and red, much like a snake's. Also, in her aberrational form she has additional limbs that can erupt from her sides. These have no opposable extremities, but do have natural blades that can be used for slashing and puncturing. She tends to favor dark clothing with open side panels, as the open side panels allow her easier access to her aberrational limbs when needed.
Powers and Skills
Cadence was an inducted member of the Order and had received the final injection of Compound 36 to make the abilities it grants permanent.
As such, she has the normal complement of abilities granted by the compound:
- Enhanced strength - Enhanced speed - Enhanced stamina - Enhanced durability - Enhanced senses - Enhanced healing factor (including resistance to disease) - Enhanced agility - Resistance to aging
Like all members of the Order, she could further activate the inert Compound 36 in her body to augment the aforementioned abilities even further. There is great risk involved in doing so, as pushing beyond an acceptable limit aggravates any side-effects of the Compound and can also lead to uncontrollable rage and an inability to form rational thought, relying purely on instinct and survival. Once this occurs, there is no treatment and the Order labels the individual an Aberration that is subsequently hunted and killed.
Cadence is one such Aberration. Upon becoming an Aberration, Compound 36 opens additional abilities. Her known additional aberrational abilities include:
- Additional limbs, bladed (x2) - Night vision (Ophidian eyes; black sclera, vertical red pupils) - Venom creation (Can create neurotoxins and release them in varied forms)
Other Information
Cadence had a friendly rivalry with Leocadia Rey while they were both Initiates. Leocadia did not become an Agent until several years after Cadence.
She is the only known Agent that had ever murdered her Handler without having been an Aberration first.
Cadence relies heavily on Miller Wright, who she considers to be her second-in-command.
Cadence is fluent in English, Italian, German, French, and Greek.
