Baron Kord Von Einzberg is a classically trained hermetic magus from Earth-1834. He is currently assigned to the Arcanum Investigation Team. A trained elementalist with an affinity for earth magic, Kord relies primarily verbal components to cast spells.
Family Legacy
Kord Von Einzberg is a descendent of the Von Einzberg family of maguses. The Von Einzberg's can trace their lineage back to even before the Middle Ages as landowners with tight relationships to the Crown. With an acumen for business that rivals that of their magic, the Von Einzbergs are among the wealthiest of the more recently founded mage families. In fact, the first magus discovered in the family was Kord's great-grandfather, Wolfgang Von Einzberg. Of particular note is how quickly the family established dominance. Within two generations, the Von Einzberg won a coveted seat within the Council of Thorns. Kord's grandfather, Meyer Von Einzberg, still holds his seat as Master of Aeromancy.
Early Life
Kord is the only child of Gunnar and Katya Von Einzberg. His father had inherited the title of 'Baron' from his grandfather when Meyer claimed his seat on the Council of Thorns. Kord's birth was auspicious and he was taken to a trusted diviner, a specialist in fortune telling and sensing magic. His parents were told that he, too, would be a great magus. The Baron imposed strict discipline on Kord, as his father had placed upon him as well, with high expectations both academically and societally. Kord was expected to be intelligent, charismatic, diplomatic, and humble. Kord was sent to a very exclusive boarding school in Geneva, Switzerland that had customized curricula for both mage and non-mage students.
Upon graduation, he was then forced to devote his attention entirely to magic study.
As an Apprentice
Given Kord's education and the Von Einzberg family status combined with his grandfather's seat on the Council of Thorns, he was assigned an exceptional mentor through the Arcanum. His studies in Switzerland gave him an excellent background in basic magic; but his apprenticeship allowed him to tap deeper into his affinity as well as explore the hermetic approach to Ars Magica. It was during this time that Kord had showed cursory knowledge of the manipulation of all natural elements, but had the most difficulty with aeromancy.
Kord's hermetic studies also included formal instruction in warding and defense arts. His mentor also noted that while Kord could, "...with practice, patience, and experience, become a specialist in Geomancy, perhaps even vie for a seat on the Council of Thorns, but he lacks the fundamental drive to do so."
As an Adept
After four years, Kord's apprenticeship ended and he was granted the title of Adept following an examination by his mentor. As an Adept, Kord would have been permitted to 'sell' his services on the open market, but with no need to do so returned home. While Kord kept up on his magic as an Adept and would attend conferences, specifically those held in London and Paris -- two of his favorite cities -- he only practiced magic when it was necessary. For something so intrinsically important to his family, he actually cared very little for it. Perhaps if he'd been given the time to learn to enjoy it, he may have felt different. On the contrary, it was something forced on him since birth.
He had been approached regarding a potential military assignment as a Battlemage but his father expressly forbade it. While perhaps not outwardly expressive of such truths, Kord's resentment of both his father and grandfather was clearly evident in his journal writings during this period. Instead, he was given more nobiliary responsibilities and worked on efforts to improve infrastructure, enhance technologies, and work for the betterment of the Von Einzberg family.
It was a mundane life, all things considered, until the 25th Annual Council of Elemental Arcane Arts held in London, England.
During this time, Gunnar had fallen ill and even the most influential healers in the area were unable to turn his condition. Kord then inherited the title of Baron from his father.
Less than a month later he was approached by Heinrich Stratton about an investigative mission from the Arcanum. He reluctantly accepted.
The Investigation of Imminent Threat
Invitations sent by Heinrich Stratton were answered by Kord, Gwendoline Harding, Isobel Buchanan, and Leon Elias Malachi. After a brief test of their skill and ability, Heinrich explained that they were hand-selected by the Arcanum to investigate a threat detected within the Nexus. The Nexus forms a crucial axis point between other worlds and a threat detected within it has the potential to spread across the entire Multiverse. To that end, their group was selected to investigate and report back.
Departing from Zbraslav Chateau in the Czech Republic by way of Zeppelin, the group travelled to Warsaw, Poland for their entry into the Nexus.
Other Information
Each member of the Von Einzberg family has shown affinity for a single element. Wolfgang had shown an affinity for Fire, Meyer for Air, Gunnar for Water, and now Kord for Earth.
